The Correct Choice and Design Decides Much
In many cases, the base materials of a product do not fulfill the mechanical, physical and/or visual quality demands placed upon them. With the galvanic application of various metal coatings, their properties (see info-selection at right) are transferred onto the product.

Suitable as base materials for galvanization are steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, brass, aluminum, diecast or ABS plastic.
Electrical conductivity in the material to be coated is generally required; that is, must first be established or improved in special cases with a conductive coating
(e.g. copper, conductive silver, conductive varnish…)

Sizes and desired characteristics decide the applicable process technology. (see also Frame and Drum Processes)
Another characteristic to consider is the component design, if the galvanic surface must exhibit perfect properties. Problem zones for galvanization, such as edges, peaks, recesses, hollow spaces, flanges, rivets… can often be prevented.
